About Him
I grew up in a tiny Cornish village and at my heart being surrounded by trees, sea and nature is what makes me feel at peace. For a while towns were something of a novelty, but I've been fortunate to have lived a some of the greatest cities on earth (defined as being able to go out, not knowing what's going to happen, but knowing it would be good!).
Fortune has smiled on the work front. I am lucky enough to be in the position that I cannot think of anything I would rather do. I'm a research scientist. I run a lab with scientific instruments (aka fancy toys!) and do quite a bit of travelling to meetings all over. I've yet to figure out how to go to Antarctica (which I?d like to) but most other places are on the list one way or another. And I get to choose what I do for the work. It's a bit like being a child and having a birthday every day.
I enjoy eating and particularly eating out somewhere nice. Especially when the perfect place just appears serendipitously. The other day (when the Indian summer was still in full swing) the most delightful pavement bistro off Neal's Yard appeared as if by magic. And there was a free table. I also love to cook, and am keen on expanding my repertoire, but as it's not exactly vast, expanding it is straightforward! My cocktail repertoire, however, benefits from extensive laboratory-based experimentation!
Sport wasn't always a spectacular success at school. Perhaps few can claim to have been disciplined on the rugby field for "gross cowardice". But at uni I got into competitive sailing and now seem to be pretty competent. Sailing and the sea are major passions. Having grown up close to the sea I love being on it, in it, or beside it. I also absolutely love the theatre (watching it), and as for movies, well I just indulged myself in a David Lynch box set.
